white knight

/waɪt naɪt/

Common

A man who rushes to defend women online or in person, often without being asked, usually to gain approval or appear morally superior.

The term exists on a spectrum. At one end: performative 'defending' done for clout or attention. At the other: being called a white knight as a way to dismiss anyone who pushes back on harassment. Context determines which is happening.

Origin and context

The term comes from chess where the white knight is a noble, protective piece. Its internet usage as a pejorative developed in gaming and forum culture around 2010-2013, particularly on 4chan and early Reddit, to describe men seen as performing chivalry for self-interested reasons.
