phonk
/fɒŋk/
Very CommonA dark, aggressive subgenre of hip hop built on Memphis rap samples, heavy 808s, and distorted horns.
Two distinct eras: original SoundCloud phonk (2016-2020, sample-heavy, grimy, underground) and TikTok phonk (2021-present, bigger bass, faster, more commercial). Fans of the original era sometimes reject the TikTok era as not real phonk.
