elo hell
/ˈiːloʊ hɛl/
Very CommonA rank bracket in competitive games where bad teammates make it impossible to climb, no matter how well you play.
Widely contested by the competitive gaming community. High-level players argue elo hell doesn't exist and that skilled players will always climb out. It's often used as self-justification for staying stuck, though the frustration behind it is real.

Elo hell vs hardstuck
elo hell
Elo hell blames the environment: bad teammates, chaotic games, unclimbable rank.
hardstuck
Hardstuck blames the player: their skill ceiling is just at that rank.
Origin and context
Elo comes from the Elo rating system designed by Arpad Elo for chess. Online gaming adopted Elo-style matchmaking, and 'elo hell' emerged as players described low-rank brackets as uniquely chaotic and unescapable. The term spread from League of Legends to virtually all ranked game communities.
